"Heya Girls!"
When your name is Caroline Esmeralda Van Der Leeuw and you like to wear flowers in your hair, you’re either a character from a Disney movie or a princess. And when you are also able to enchantingly sing songs about the erotic and psychological pitfalls of man-woman relationships in an eloquent and deep way- you become a star and sing at the Vienna State Opera. That is exactly where the formidable “Caro Emerald” will be performing for the Vienna Jazz Festival this Friday and just like one of the shrouded in myth cinema stars of the 40ies she will make the room swing. Hollywood mambos, groove jazz, swing and tango- when Caro Emerald sings “A Night Like This” (here) our currently very crazy world finally starts to smile exuberantly again. By the way, this Saturday the no less awesome Melody Gardot will be performing and on Sunday we have to decide between Angelika Kirchschlager (with Rufus Wainwright) and Joan Baez. Phew, hopefully the city can take that much women’s power ;-)

Wishing you a lovely week

“Kino wie noch nie”
Great cinema beneath the stars! From today until August 23rd the Austrian Film Archive presents outstanding films in the beautiful garden of the Film Archive at the Augartenspitz. It starts tonight with “Taxi” (Golden Bear Berlinale 2015), and then every night a different film is shown: classics, premieres and rediscoveries- and one special with films by the Coen brothers and another one with Peter Bogdanovich (Paper Moon!). Before and after the cinema you can eat at the “Grünstern Gartenküche”- where fresh organic food from small Viennese producers is used for cooking.

“Kino wie noch nie”, Obere Augartenstraße 1,1020 Vienna. From July 2 21:30. 8,50 €. Web

Office Chair Run
Very strange! A pimped out office chair as a stylish racing vehicle, your own legs as the motor and off you go, racing down the waterside promenade in Kaisermühlen: welcome to Austria’s first Office Chair Championship! Working in teams, you have to overcome obstacles and beat the clock on a 600-meter long track. Extra nicely pimped out chairs and very inventive racing costumes can additionally earn creative awards. There is really only one question left: How do you get a bulky chair with spoiler and flag to the race in one piece? That’s a matter of creativity as well ;-)

Meeting point: Rudolf-Nurejew-Promenade 9, 1220 Vienna July 2. Start 17:00. 99 €/team. Web

The art of saying No
Oh yes, such a difficult little word, the tiresome no. “Could you help me?” is the infamous question that makes many women relent. But what is actually the big problem with saying no? It’s definitely not easy, even the organizers of the workshop, Petra Czanik and Stella Damm, admit that. The good news is: we can learn to say no. The participants of the introductory workshop learn how to stay friendly but determined while saying no, also through role-plays. That will definitely help to wake up your sense of self-assertion! Free entry, but please sign up.

Naadam festival
This is actually outside of the city borders, but: one, the Badener Bahn goes there directly, and two, this event will bring colorful Mongolia closer than it ever was before. Because today the most important folk festival of Mongolia is celebrated in the city of Baden. The “Trabrennbahn” presents itself Mongolian to the core, from scarcely dressed wrestlers to archers on horses - which explains the location. In addition you can see original yurts, eat treats like Huushuur and Niislel salad (sounds interesting, right?) and experience Mongolian art and music the whole day long. Well then, naadam!

Field and farm festival
Pure nature! We all know urban gardening already, but in the Lobau the concept is taken even further: with urban farming. How that works in a big city is demonstrated today at the summer festival between Schillerwasser and Mühlwasser. The organic farm Polzer-Puk, Vienna’s oldest organic farm, together with all the clubs located there (like the Lobauerinnen and the small City Farm) invites you to a cheerful get-together. There will be guided tours through the fields, herbs walking tours, horses, donkeys and alpacas, and also locally produced good and healthy delicacies and arts and crafts. Plus: culinary treats!

Kissing not allowed!
The secret eroticism-code of art: on the World Kiss Day (yes, really, that’s today!) a special guided tour through the collection of the Belvedere involves the representation of nudity and intimacy. Even in the last century kissing-scenes were often a form of protest against reactionary mentality. A painted, passionate kiss like the one by Klimt was enough for a scandal. In today’s Europe only a same-sex kiss comes even close to being a breach of taboo. And that is why the guided tour “Skandalbilder” tells a story of different times.

Surfing in the middle of Vienna
Aloha! And where would those waves be? By the old Danube, where the first wake surf center opened! Here you don’t surf huge waves like in California, Portugal or Hawaii but you can definitely expect at least a height of one meter. And this is how it works: a motorboat generates waves, which you can surf elegantly. Without a rope or any kind of connection to anything. Ideal for tricks and jumps. The good news for all couch potatoes: wake surfing is really easy to learn. So, DanubeSurfer: We’re the lords of the boards…

Oh man - menfolk in Vienna
The singer Herbert Grönemeyer has basically said it all when it comes to men. They wage wars, buy women and are (still) indispensable in this world. Men from Vienna throughout history also meet these requirements- and that is why Gabriele Buchas leads an unconventional guided tour following the tracks of brilliant, powerful, controversial and handsome men in the inner city. Giacomo Casanova pleased the women, Rudolf Steiner developed his anthroposophical view of the world, a rose-colored prince was besotted and a war minister was killed - uhm, or better said in Vienna: lynched!

Heurigen season has started
The tasty flavors of Lower Austria: sweet like a poppy-seed strudel, mild like perry, refreshing like apple juice and juicy like beef ragout. Whoever wants to experience the tastes of all four regions of our “neighbor province”, should go to the Palais Niederösterreich today- because the courtyard will turn into a summer “Heuriger” for three days. A spot in the shade, wine of the region and lots of supporting program including music and guided tours. The tasty tidbit market is especially delicious: with pestos and chili sauces from Stefan Grossauer and oils and poppy-seed specialties of the region.

Sissi – pouch years of an Empress
The Tschauner Stage is rocking the musical world – with Sissi as a man! If you ask someone from New York what she associates with Vienna (except for Conchita) she will probably say Mozartkugel or the well-known Empress. Ok, maybe a few exceptions will say Wittgenstein. Those are exactly the kind of stereotypes the last improv-theater in Vienna combats, with a wild trashy musical with humor and esprit. With this shrill-absurd production director Markus Richter rewrites history together with the Tschauner Reloaded Ensemble, which also includes musical and cabaret performers. For odd birds ;-)

Kellerwerk
What are an oil barrel or old car tires doing in a living room? That question becomes unnecessary when you marvellingly rummage through the upcycling-design shop of Romana Fürst and Sascha Johannik. In the small shop with workshop old stuff is turned into great “shabby chic”: colorful bowls made of old sheet metal, a golden glittering car tire used as a table, cool concrete lamps, jewelry made of typewriter keys and pastel-colored pimped out old chairs. Most of it is manufactured by the two trained carpenters themselves, some pieces come from other upcycling-artists. Absolutely original!

Severin
Just the garden is reason enough to go there! Tables in the grass underneath ancient walnut trees, dreamy historic walls and a chic terrace- the recently opened Severin is currently probably one of the most beautiful places in Vienna. And the location: very romantic, on the outskirts of Vienna in Sievering, at the edge of the Vienna Woods. The cooking can be described as fine seasonal kitchen: calf’s liver, carpaccio, organic goulash, white chocolate mousse- and breakfast on the weekends. By the way, it’s just as beautiful inside. With wooden tables, old brick floors and thick walls. Superfine summer tip!
